Grade 11 students showcased their talents at the Radio Drama Competition during English Fortnight at the Luxembourg campus on January 25, 2024.

The radio drama revolved around the second act of Arthur Miller’s play “Death of a Salesman”, allowing students to exhibit their own creativity through scriptwriting, dialogue, and audio and visual backdrop.

The event was graced by Sir Garry Gonzalo as the host and featured the panel of judges including Ms. Carla Villanueva, the English subject area chair, followed by Sir Ron Pastidio and Ms. Maricar Abaricia.

Judging criteria for the radio drama included 20% for sound effects, 25% for vocal characteristic, 10% for preparedness, 10% for tone pitch, 10% for pauses, 10% for enunciation, and 15% for volume.

Efficiency kicked off the competition with their adaptation titled “Willy Goes Golfing”, unraveling the tale of  Willy’s shortcomings as a father and Biff’s impulsive actions leading to tragedy.

Persistence, under the same title “Death of a Salesman,” portrayed the aftermath of Willy's death, illustrating the Loman Brother’s reunion after a period of estrangement.

Innovation introduced a unique narrative, transforming Willy into a gold-seeking miner, depicting struggles that ultimately birthed a new hope.

Industry depicted Willy amidst hallucinations and voices, culminating in his tragic demise.

Synergy continued the narrative post-Willy's demise, focusing on Biff's hesitation to marry because of the memories of his father, yet concluding with a hopeful ending.

“The Echoes of Reverie” by 11-Growth Mindset delved into Willy's emotional journey, culminating in his tragic end through a car crash.

Excellence retold the plot, with a twist where Biff meets his end instead of Willy.

To wrap up the Radio Drama competition, Competence added a thrilling twist, retelling the story through a mafia-themed storyline.

Every group displayed their creativity, providing a unique interpretation of the story which was the highlight of the competition.

Hanks Montenegro from 11-Competence expressed, “We had a lot of fun writing the ups and downs of the story, and the concept itself was so cool.”

“Despite feeling nervous and intimidated by the other performances, I believe our group delivered a strong narrative,” said Art Anada from 11-Innovation. “Voice acting was incredibly fun, and I’d definitely do it again.”

Winners were announced during the English Fortnight awarding ceremony, with  11-Efficiency as the 2nd runner-up, followed by 11-Competence as the 1st runner-up, and 11-Industry securing the champion title in the Radio Drama Competition.

Kimoon (Martin) Kim, a member of the winning team, shared,  “I feel so amazing and so gratified, I feel so proud of my members and I was really glad how our group mates collaborated with each other to achieve something amazing.”

Despite technical difficulties encountered by some groups, their resilience and stellar performances contributed to the event’s overall success, leaving both the audience and judges thoroughly entertained.
