Because of the growing complexity of modern society, a number of students are bummed out thinking about college. For better or for worse, college has become a defining point in one’s life. People tend to judge others based on college degrees ーwhether they have one or not. The government encourages students to go to college, parents have high expectations for their children, and teachers push students to go to college. However, what do college students have to say about college? After all, college doesn’t solely equate to education but rather has underlying implications.
When asked what they think of college, Son, a first-year art major student answered that it is the stepping stone to reach her goals and dreams. Meanwhile, Kim, a second-year social warfare student said, “For me, college is a place where it is an area of exploration.
While the government and the society encourages students to go to college, what do actual college students think about that? Kim mentioned that not everyone has the same goals and ways of reaching their own goals. To be more realistic, Son said “You could do something else using the tuition fee to learn something you’ve wanted to learn but couldn’t, there is a side effect due to this meritocratic society”. Thus both of them disagree with it.
Ever wondered the difference between high school and college life? For those of you who are curious about it, College according to Kim, requires more independence unlike in high school. In college, there is not much repetition of discussions, and there are many professors in college; therefore, there is little to no chance of having the same professor in two subjects. Conversely, Son stated that in college you could choose your preferred subjects and make your own timetable.
Summing up, these messages are for students who are preparing for college or who are worrying about college. Kim said “uncertainty doesn’t mean failure. Uncertainty means a chance to discover your strengths and weaknesses.” Kim wants you to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Son, as an art major student responded “practice and practice until you become a picasso”. Sounds amusing right? But, there is nothing better than practicing to reach your goal.
Each and everyone of us have different talents, goals and ideas. Either path you take, you will still face challenges and enduring them means you can finally reach your dreams and goals. Society may have made you think that college is the most defining point in your life, but it isn’t. You don’t have to change yourself to fit in a society that makes you think college is the most important point in everyone’s life.
