As AY 2023-2024 comes to a close, another Student Council Elections is set to happen for the upcoming school year. Among the two vying for a majority vote is the MILES Party; with its aim to always go the extra mile, the party has set its sights on winning the people’s hearts. In this article, The Mover had the opportunity to interview select members of the MILES Party to learn more about their hardworking team and aspirations.
The MILES Party consists of José Lorenzo “Jorenz” Buendia as President, Zoe Gabrielle Tulod as Vice President, Don Enrique “King” Padilla as Secretary, Daniel Beneleo Baniqued as Treasurer, River Ypon as HUMSS Representative, Helena Carpio as STEM Representative, Czea Margaret “Maggie” Lim as ABM Representative, Chaeho Song as Grade 10 Representative, Julianne Nido as Grade 9 Representative, and Arnav Raj as Grade 8 Representative.
“Our main values are reform and transparency," the MILES Party said collectively about what makes them unique candidates. "We [believe] that we cannot plan overly ambitious events and other such proposals if the very foundation of the [Student Council] is not solid enough to sustain such efforts in the first place, and we intend on solidifying this foundation with the help of every student willing to lend a hand.”
They continued informing that they envisioned progressive and foundational change for the council if they are elected. Their mission is to balance both fun and short-term proposals such as events and implement long-term foundational changes like clubs and Student Ambassador reforms. In line with their values, the MILES Party said that the proposals created were done out of a necessity for change. They believe that creating a more capable Student Council that attends to students’ needs comes first before creating short-term proposals.
The MILES Party is determined to prove they can run the Student Council positions. The party consists of many first-time candidates, so they believe it is up to their values as both candidates and people to prove their capability. Some of their candidates have even earned their stripes outside the school in learning experiences in finance and politics.
Secretarial candidate Padilla shared his purpose for running for this position in the Student Council 2024-2025. He elaborated, “If I were to choose my single most valued purpose, it would be the pursuit of helping and representing as much of our fellow students as possible.” He added that with his knowledge of government roles, he believes that the achievement of proper student representation happens with trust between them and the Student Council.
The 2024-2025 Student Council Elections are set to happen on the morning of May 15. All Monarchs will decide on who their future Student Council members will be.
