In celebration of the English Fortnight, the Grade 10 students of SISC showcased their talents at the Music and Monologue Competition at Luxembourg Hall last Thursday, January 25, 2024.

All six sections presented two monologues live, accompanied by their corresponding pre-recorded music videos. The monologues served as teasers to the storyline of the music video covers featuring songs from the 1980s. Each performance was evaluated based on specific criteria and stood a chance to win up to seven awards.

In the minutes leading up to the event, preparations were in full swing: lights were tested, participants rehearsed diligently, and the audience began to arrive. Students, teachers, and staff members alike eagerly came to witness the performances.

The event commenced with the hosts, Ms. Angel and Sir MC, taking charge of the bustling crowd, ensuring order and excitement. They welcomed the audience and provided an overview of the event, detailing its purpose, participants, and the criteria for determining the winners.

It was outlined that each class was permitted to present only two monologues and accompanying music videos. The performances were eligible for seven awards: Best Music Video, Best Editing, Best Director, Best Vocal Performance, Best Actor in a Music Video, Best Actress in a Music Video, and Best Monologue.

The judging criteria encompassed various aspects of both the monologue and the music video. Criteria for the music video included: Theme and Concept, Cinematic background, Performance & Choreography, Editing transition, and Audio quality. For the monologue, criteria included: Understanding of concept, Clarity of idea, Creativity, Overall Impact, and Delivery.

The hosts also introduced the panel of judges: Sir Gary Gonzalo, Ms. Hannah Assuncion, Sir Pastillo, Ms. Carla Villanueva, Ms. Morales, and Sir Fred. The order of presenters was then announced, with Commitment kicking off the performances, followed by Conviction, Leadership, Patriotism, Prudence, and lastly Responsibility.

The awarding ceremony took place on February 12, 2024, during the High School English Fortnight Culminating Activity. Commitment bagged four of the seven awards: Best Music Video for their presentation of “When I Met You” by APO Hiking Society, Best Director under the helm of Reigan Salazar, Best Vocal Performance by Juan Lobien for singing the mentioned, and Best Actress in a Music Video with Jian Hwang.

Jassley Espiritu of Patriotism won the Best Editing award for her class’ music video of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper. Gwan Jin Lee of Leadership was awarded Best Actor in a Music Video for starring in his class’ presentation of “Reality” by Richard Sanderson. Finally, Karyssa Alamon of Patriotism begged the award for Best Monologue for her declamation to “Material Girl” by Madonna.
