When was the last time you thanked your mom? Or anyone for that matter?
“Don’t take things for granted.” It’s a line we hear so often that it usually goes in one ear and out the other. Life truly is short, and as cliche as it may sound, we embrace this fact.
There are many great things brought about by showing gratitude not limited to just making others feel appreciated, but also to helping oneself. Reflecting and remembering all the possessions that you can be grateful for helps you realize how lucky you are.
Some get so lost down the loop of wanting more and more – comparing themselves to others and being so focused on oneself – that they forget to see the little things in life. It becomes part of their mindset to think that they’re unhappy and have nothing compared to that other guy with an x amount of things, likes, friends, etc. What about the things you have? Instead of dwelling on what you don’t have, why not make the most out of what you do have?
You may not have as much in comparison to others, but no matter the amount, you will always have something that you can share. Apart from being grateful for what you have, don’t forget to share the things you have in excess. Old shoes with minor damages may seem disposable, but many kids would greatly appreciate something like this. Those who beg on the streets with no shoes and torn up clothes don’t always need monetary donations. Even with your friends, showing gratitude to them doesn’t have to be through expensive gifts or grand gestures. Actions that come from the heart are what show how truly grateful you are.
Asking yourself, “What are 5 things I can be grateful for today,” and answering with the simplest things – such as getting to eat McDonald’s, watching your favorite show, finishing a requirement, sharing a sandwich with someone in need, and having friends and family to talk to – can help you recognize the small luxuries you actually have.
A life wherein you’ve helped no one but yourself is not one worth living.
Be grateful for what you have, share your blessings, and enjoy life.
