From the HUMSS class of 11-Efficiency, cartoon-lover and musical aficionado Jacinda Alonso regularly uploads wonderful, colorful inked drawings on Instagram. These works showcase her favorite fandoms, splashes of color, and an intriguing, memorable art style that she describes as a combination of realism and ‘cartoonism.’
The Mover team reached out to her for comments on her artwork.
The Mover: What inspired you to draw?
Jacinda: The closest thing would be cartoons. My siblings and I would spend afternoons watching TV and drawing while we watched. Right now, my favorites are She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Steven Universe, The Owl House, Regular Show, and Adventure TIme. If I had to choose artists that have inspired my art style, it’d be Karl Hadrika (Becky Prim), Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe), Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), and Disney.
TM: What can you say about yourself as an artist?
JA: I think I present myself as a pretty chill artist just like my personality, but I quickly turn into a perfectionist in my process. I will admit that I constantly compare my artwork with others, even though I know that’s a bad art habit! I honestly can’t help it. I also take a lot of inspiration from concept art from shows or movies. I take a lot of inspiration from seeing the developing artwork and sketches.
TM: What can you say about your drawings?
JA: I used to not sketch anything, I used to draw straight away with a pen, but I recently started sketching seriously. I'm proud of this development, personally. Right now, I like how my drawings look because I’ve added more variation in how heavy the [line weight] is, making the drawings more visually interesting. Plus, all the hatching I do compensates for the lack of colors at times. I focus on inking more; because, one, I really like the medium, and two, I suck at watercolors.
