On May 19, 2021, Patricia “Pats” Salgado of 12-Service uploaded her first video on
YouTube: a cover of “If the World Was Ending” by JP Saxe and Julia Michaels. Posting it on that platform was a big jump from streaming her impromptu singing sessions on Instagram Stories, and Pats says she’s looking forward to doing more and leaving a positive impact with her music.
Her YouTube channel is only an extension of her lifelong passion for music. From a young age, she was inspired by her late grandfather, the OPM legend Rene Garcia of Hotdog. With songs like “Manila,” “Bongga Ka, ‘Day,” and “Annie Batumbakal,” Garcia was a large proponent of Manila Sound.
Despite trying different hobbies and expanding her interests, Pats has always gravitated towards music: listening to, performing, or even writing it.
“I’ve been singing for years now,” she says.
A more popular example of her endeavors was being the lead singer of Ours Once More, a band formed with her previous classmates. As for her own channel, she does plan to upload more once she’s able to since classes have begun in earnest. She says so with genuine excitement.
One of the main driving forces behind her channel is to do the thing she enjoys most in the world to make other people happy. She describes it as a cycle of happiness: “I want to be able to make other people feel good in any way, be it on sunny or rainy days or when they're just bored. It doesn't matter if [they’re a] big audience or not, as long as [my content] makes them happy. Singing brings me happiness, and I want to bring happiness to other people.”
One could say that her passion project was influenced by her interests. Pats is a proud ARMY and loves BTS because of their positivity and how they address subjects that other artists shy away from, like mental health. They’ve brought some comfort in her life, and BTS’ global acclaim inspires her. The K-Pop group proves that music truly transcends language and continues to be universal due to their global acclaim despite their songs being mainly in Korean.
Pats admits that she started her channel on a whim during the summer. In her interview, she laughs and says that she’s exposed herself revealing how much she relies on her whims, but firmly calls it a strength. In her mind, overthinking is what holds people back.
“If you have a dream or if there's something you want to do in your life,” she says, “if it’s something you want to do or you just like doing it, it's what makes you you. Only you can dictate what's best for you. If you think you're not great at a certain skill, it depends on your level of ambition or motivation. [Those things will get you] a long way. You can improve with [those things alone].”
