As International Week 2022 concludes, the event called for a flash of something new: mache passport making.
JHS and SHS classes designed and created mockup passports for the country their section had been given. All outputs were displayed in the Luxembourg Campus hallway last October 28 and November 16 for everyone to see in an interactive exhibit.
The student-made passports featured national symbols, cultural icons, travel landmarks, customs and traditions, and conversational expressions of a class’ country assignment.
“One thing that represents internationalism is coming up with an activity that will enable students to understand cultures and international mindedness. The [SLGE] Department came up with the idea to design a passport,” SLGE Basic Ed Point Person Sir Joseph Gregorio said.
“This year, we encouraged students to design their own passports in order to immerse themselves and get to understand the culture of their assigned country,” he added.
Previous International Weeks featured the practice of designing classrooms into a mini-gallery of a class’ country assignment. However, this had been changed due to the importance of practicing health protocols while in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the activity being targeted towards the face-to-face setup, both VOLT and HyVOLT Monarchs per section collaborated on making the layouts and designs. Some teachers gave their period to help the students accomplish their passports. The students expressed great delight and enjoyment in this activity as it promoted collaboration.
“[The passport making] helped the class cooperate in order to accomplish the task,” an anonymous SISC student remarked
“I feel like it connects us with the country our section was assigned to,” they added.
During the actual presentation, both students and teachers insightfully went over the displayed outputs, flipping through the pages while showing great interest. Some students even admired the passports and praised the classes that designed them.
