RECAP: Building camaraderie through the Student Council campaign season

From May 6, 2024, to May 10, 2024, the corridors and classrooms of the Luxembourg Hall were filled with activity as Student Council candidates launched their campaigns with enthusiasm and determination. This annual election week saw a flurry of organized efforts by aspiring leaders to secure support and convey their visions for the student body. Booths were set up in the Luxembourg hallway to showcase each candidate's advocacies and missions and room-to-room campaigns were conducted to also allow students to know more about their running student council candidates.

The Student Council campaign season featured candidates representing various parties and independent individuals vying for leadership roles within the student body. Each party presented a distinct platform and set of priorities aimed at addressing different aspects of school life and advocating for the interests of their fellow students. Meanwhile, independent candidates brought forth their unique perspectives and ideas, positioning themselves as alternatives to the party-affiliated contenders.

MAX Party

The MAX Party drew inspiration from "Big Hero 6," particularly focusing on the character Baymax and the themes of innovation and passion exemplified in the movie. Like the camaraderie among Baymax and his friends, the party has developed a strong sense of teamwork during their campaign. They emphasized their collective passion for making positive changes within the student body, mirroring the characters' determination in the film. The party's vision was to empower students by honing their passions to fuel creativity, competence, and innovation, envisioning a year marked by these qualities. Their mission was to create avenues for students to pursue their individual passions, fostering a vibrant community of diverse opportunities, and supporting each person in achieving their goals within the student community.

MILES Party

The MILES party drew inspiration from the movie "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," featuring Miles Morales, aligning with their values as most members are new in regards to political experience. They connected with Morales' journey of surpassing societal expectations despite being young, just like how one could step out of comfort zone to inspire positive change. MILES aimed to foster an inclusive school community, emphasizing empowerment through motivation, innovation, and leadership, promoting a creative and welcoming environment where every student can contribute.

Yun Seo Cho (Independent)

Yun Seo Cho's mission as an independent candidate for Secretary was to lead the student body by creating impactful and memorable experiences grounded in integrity and accountability. Yun Seo’s platform prioritized the needs of students, advocating tirelessly to shape a more inclusive and promising future. The vision was to establish an academic, social, and emotional environment where every student flourishes, emphasizing harmony, diversity, and the appreciation of individual contributions. This vision underscored a commitment to nurturing a supportive and cohesive community within the school.

Eunsong Choi (Independent)

Eunsong Choi's campaign strategy for GAS Representative centered on demonstrating continuous engagement and responsiveness to the needs and concerns of GAS students. This approach aligned with her mission and vision to enhance the reputation of the GAS strand and challenge any associated stereotypes. Melody emphasized the importance of approachability and hard work in leadership to achieve this vision, ensuring that GAS students receive the support and representation they deserve. This proactive and collaborative approach underscored her commitment to serving as a dedicated and effective representative for GAS students.

Allarice Laraño (Independent)

Alarice Larano's campaign for Grade 10 Level Representative was centered around a vibrant booth theme featuring everything Pochacco, reflecting her personal interests and providing a relatable connection to her personality as a candidate. Her mission and vision focused on fostering collaboration with her batch-mates to develop programs and activities that allow them to pursue their passions and make the most of their final year in junior high school. Alarice aimed to lead with transparency, honesty, and a genuine appreciation for student perspectives, demonstrating a commitment to inclusive and student-centered leadership.

In addition to the candidates, we also have Noah Joudeh who ran as an independent Treasurer.

Despite the variety of parties and candidates, all students are interactive not only with their booths but also by re-posting their friends’ campaign posts through their Instagram accounts. This high level of interactivity reflected the strong sense of camaraderie and support within the student body, where students rally behind their peers' campaigns and initiatives. With this, Monarchs voted on Election Day on May 15, 2024.
