Spooky Seniors’ Afternoon

Batch parties are a Southville tradition, awaited by students yearly. It gives students the chance to hang out with friends, let loose, and get to know each other better. These are typically held during the first term of the school year. It consists of performances, activities, and even fine dining. However, due to the pandemic, these parties are now being held virtually. Even though students are no longer able to dine and meet face to face, the faculty and student officers put great effort into making the online event as engaging and fun as possible.

The seniors of SISC were all invited to attend the virtual batch party last November 12, 2021. It was held 12 days after Halloween so it was decided that the event's theme revolved around that. Games, activities and performances were all prepared by the students. The event was hosted by emcees Matthew Cabiles and Juliana Tan.

The first activity on the list was a game of ‘4 pictures 1 word’, a light and easy game to break the ice — an unfreezer. This was then followed by the first official game. The classic game of ‘Bring me’ — but with a twist. Students had to solve the riddle in order to guess what the item was, then rush to find it and present it to the camera. Since this was done virtually and students were all in their homes, the hosts could really see the students scrambling to find these items around their rooms. This game was followed by an intermission number by Dominic Tayzon where he sang a song acapella.

The second game was called ‘Connect the Lyrics’. The hosts sang a line from a song then called on a section to sing a different song line that starts with the last lyric that the hosts sang. After this they would call on another section to do the same, having the last lyric of the previous section as the first lyric of their song line. The students found this quite challenging but thought that it was overall a fun experience.

Following the second game, all the new students were introduced — a yearly tradition, and one of the main goals of the event. Afterwards, an intermission number made by the students from 10-Conviction was played. It showcased their talents and immense amount of creativity.

The final game was a scribble race, a chance for the artists of the batch to showcase their capabilities. Student representatives from each section were racing to be able to draw a good picture of the object stated by the hosts, given a short amount of time. Teachers voted on the output they found most favorable and the scores were tallied.

The last intermission number was sponsored by the batch’s resident singer, Jaden Remulla. He performed a song entitled “To reminisce on the past years, a throwback video prepared by 10-Prudence was played. The students were all reacting in the chat box, stating how much they missed face to face classes and being able to see their friends.

The party ended with an awarding ceremony. Days prior to the event, students were asked to vote on who they believe deserves certain awards such as “The helping hand award” and “Reading rockstar award”.

Overall, the Spooky Seniors' Afternoon was a success. Matthew Cabiles, one of the event’s hosts, comments “I personally believe that the whole Spooky Seniors' Afternoon went about smoothly, especially with the presence of class council officers who were all so willing to help each other out”.

Many of the students found that the most enjoyable and entertaining part of the afternoon were the games. Rianna Ang remarks “I found all the games fun, especially the song lyric association game. It was fun to watch the students try to think of how to connect the words and what lyrics to sing.”

This is the student’s last batch party before they will be advancing to select their strands in senior highschool next year. The students are hopeful that face to face classes will be returning soon and that they will all be able to experience prom together.
