February is known as the National Arts Month in the Philippines. With this, the Special Subjects Department organized the celebration of National Arts Month 2023 in SISC.
To further embrace this month, the SISC Art Society and SISC Avant-Garde Club presented two major artistic competitions: Live Sketching and Cake Decorating. These competitions, which were held in the Luxembourg Hall, were on-the-spot races against time in which winners were decided based on the most aesthetic and visually-pleasing works.
Live Sketching Competition
Whether you are an emerging artist, a young student, or even a senior, art knows no boundaries when it comes to the enjoyment of extending one's creativity. In line with this, a Live Sketching Competition was held last February 10, 2023, at the Luxembourg Hall with the theme “Hands that Heal the World.”
The contestants ranged from students in grades 6-12. All contestants had to race against the 90-minute timer because it was an on-the-spot competition.
The contestants had to draw as quickly as possible without any prior sketching. during the competition, contestants were permitted to bring their gadgets for reference photos; the only accepted materials for the competition were pencils, charcoal, black pens, and ⅛ illustration boards for a monotone sketch.
Tenth grader Vince Kritstian Santos, one of the winners of the live sketching competition and an aspiring artist, was given the opportunity to showcase his skills in a public setting. He says that he was able to showcase his talents in the competition stating that, “by providing us [participants] with proper time and resources to accomplish our piece and giving us recognition in front of others.”
While having these external factors can certainly be beneficial, it is also ultimately up to the individual to find enjoyment in what they are doing. Vince emphasized the importance of enjoying the creative process rather than solely focusing on the end result. By doing so, he was able to fully immerse himself in his artwork and produce something that truly reflected his unique style and perspective.
Vince says he wants to continue honing his skills and sharing his work with others. Moreover, he recognized the value of having an outlet for his creativity and being able to express himself through his artwork.
Cake Decorating Competition
To make the month of February even sweeter, Cake Decorating Competition was held on the 13th of February, inviting both VOLT and HyVOLT students from Grades 6 to 12.
The participants were provided with chiffon cakes; however, they were required to bring their own decorating materials, such as food decorations and icing tools
Some contestants based the design of their cakes on characters from popular media such as "Minions" and "Minecraft," while others even went as far as adding creative confectioneries. Everyone had one goal in mind; to make the best and most artistic chiffon cake by the end of 90 minutes.
Juliana Denise Tan, a Grade 11 ABM student, was a first-time cake decorator who participated in this competition. She expresses how the experience helped her practice and develop skills in piping frosting into different shapes and designs. Despite being new to the field, she mentions that she was both glad and surprised to have won the competition.
She joined the competition because she enjoys trying out new things, especially in fields she has never been in before.
She states that, “The competition provided a unique opportunity for students to challenge themselves and enhance their skills, all while having fun in the process.
Art sketching and cake decorating are two creative activities that require patience, attention to detail, and practice to master. Through these art competitions, students were able to show and enhance their creativity and artistic skills to the utmost level. The SISC Community believes that these events were a good opportunity for fellow students to relieve their academic stress.
