The Christmas Dragons

A Kindness Project X The Mover Christmas Collab

Artwork by Julia Barretto and Kelsey Colasito

There once was a girl named Holly.

She wanted to live in a village filled with jolly.

However, that wasn’t the case.

For Holly, she had another problem to face.

Happiness is what her village is striving for,

But with the dragons, they say it is nearly impossible!

“Dragons, who fly circles around our village,

steal warmth for their fiery breaths!

Looks to me like they’ve shown no ounce of regret.”

Is what her village claims.

Holly does not like the dragons.

For they show off their warmth by blazing it above her home.

How can a creature be so unbothered? She thought.

But deep down, Holly still questioned if they were really troublesome.

She’s seen how spiteful her village reacts to the creatures.

The snowballs they point at their faces,

The insults they can never take back,

And the truth of what her people lack…

Joy!

Holly’s thoughts had changed,

Something inside of her had sparked!

If she wanted her village to be jolly,

Why not try to make a mark?

If she can calm the dragons

And bring delight,

Will it work?

No, she thought, maybe not quite.

Holly stayed in bed that night,

Wondering how she can make peace.

Was it a lost cause?

Will this battle never cease?

Until at midnight, Holly noticed a small tail creeping in her fireplace.

A dragon. she thought. Why are they here?

Stepping out of her bed, she saw blazing orange hues.

The dragons hadn’t been hurting the village,

They have been giving us clues!

It clicked in Holly’s mind.

The dragons weren’t surrounding her village with hate.

They circle around the village to help bring warmth,

And to fill flames in every fireplace!

Christmas morning, Holly awoke her village.

She spread the news in hopes of change.

However, her village did not fully understand.

How can something so scary not want something in a greedy exchange?

A few people believed Holly

And said they saw their fireplace glow, too.

But it wasn’t enough to convince the crowd,

And they had already planned what to do.

Before Holly could react, she heard a SWOOSH.

The dragons came to deliver a message!

In a quick moment, Holly could see the villagers about to attack.

Holly stepped in front of them and yelled: “Stand back!”

But the dragons seemed at ease.

There was no look of anger on their faces.

They merely walked to the forefront,

Right in front of the villagers’ places.

In between one of the dragons’ claws was a scroll.

The dragon handed it to a villager to read.

Unsure, the villager took it with fright,

But slowly did their deed.

“It is your goal for joy that you, yourselves, are provoking.

But what you strive for is not what you were showing.

You must not jump to conclusions, but you may still stand ground,

For we have hearts that will try to protect our hometown.

So take a moment to spread happiness,

Because it is you who is the joy.

Inside all of us, there is a truth:

We must be the joy we all wish for!”

As the last sentence ended, the villagers felt a warmth inside of them they had never felt before.

Was this the love they had intended?

Was this the start of something more?

The firewood in the distance could be heard crackling.

The villagers looked around at the orange hues.

Their homes, their village, had been warmed by the dragons.

Holly noticed the villagers’ faces softened with realization.

They had all seen only the bad in the dragons,

But never saw what lies beneath the pointy teeth and scales:

A heart

That every single person shares.
