Top 5 Movies To Watch On Holy Week

One of Christianity's most important events is the Holy Week. It is a week-long event preceding Easter. This year, it is celebrated from April 2 to 8. It is the time of the year when we commemorate Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. In the Philippines, people celebrate Holy Week in a variety of ways by fasting, abstaining, participating in the Pabasa/Pasyon, visiting seven churches, and celebrating Palm Sunday and the Moriones Festival. Other than that, I would personally watch movies about Jesus to remember all of the sacrifices he has made for us. Now, I will be sharing my top five movies to watch during Holy Week. Let us jump right into it!

1. The Passion of the Christ (2004)

The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson, is one of the first movies I’ve watched during Holy Week. It has made me emotional, but it also taught me many things. Starting from before the birth of Jesus until he was crucified. The Passion of the Christ shows Jesus’ last twelve hours of his life, from his emotional agony in the Garden of Gethsemane until his final moments of the crucifixion.

2. Son of God (2014)

Son of God focuses more on the purpose of Christ in coming into this world. The movie started with John narrating God’s promise and covenant with his people throughout Israel’s history, up to the Romans’ dominance and tension. After the birth of Jesus was portrayed, Jesus approaches Peter 30 years later to invite him to join his quest to change the world. If you're curious about how Jesus was born and the circumstances surrounding his birth into the world, I'd suggest watching this film.

3. Paul, Apostle of Christ (2018)

Paul, Apostle of Christ is a sorrowful and uplifting portrayal of one of the most significant figures in the early church. He paved the way for the rise of the early church at a time when Christians were being burned alive in the streets of Rome or executed in the arena. This movie details Paul's life, writings, and acts in servitude to Christ.

4. The Gospel of John (2003)

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the four gospels that can be found in the New Testament. John was the leading member of Jesus’ Twelve Apostles. This movie emphasizes that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God, according to the Gospel of John. He performs miracles and gives eternal life to all who believe in him.

5. Risen (2016)

If you want to experience a new perspective on the events of Christ’s Easter or Resurrection Sunday, Risen is just the right movie for you. Instead of having the point of view of Christ and the disciples, it focuses on the Roman Centurion assigned by Pontius Pilate to investigate the disappearance of Jesus’ body and appease the swelling rebellion of the Jews. The quest led him to Jerusalem and the path of the disciples, where he discovered the truth about the mystery, and that changed his life.

.

And that concludes my list! I hope that you found any of these movies interesting to watch during the Holy Week because these movies not only help you learn more about your religion, but can also change your perspective in life. Make the most of this week to spend quality time with your family, learn more about your religion, and as well as reflect on yourself. Happy watching!
