Change occurs naturally as time passes. To create change in the way you want, it will take effort on your part to cause a different result. It takes consistency to make changes happen. However, it's not as easy as it seems to work continuously on things you aren't familiar with.
Maybe you decide to study every day and review the lessons you've learned for that day. It will probably work for three days, but then you will find yourself going back to your bed and browsing your phone for hours again. You can be disappointed at yourself for not being able to accomplish such a simple task you must do to improve. Those success stories wherein people say that they were able to change an irresponsible child into a responsible child may seem unrealistic as it won't happen to you.
So how do we change?
We have to focus on our routines because routines are the roots of our habits, either good or bad. Many others say that giving yourself a reward after accomplishing a task you should do is a way to get motivated to work on it. This is a type of immediate reward giving, and this action can be seen when you use your phones to get immediate entertainment or to order fast food whenever you are hungry for immediate satiety. It can lead to the implementation of bad habits, as it will be repeated.
Immediate rewards may not be the best way to keep you motivated, but receiving triggers from a certain event can be a motivation for you to ‘act.’ For example, you failed an exam. What you have to do is simple: study. You will get motivation from your past experiences so that you will not repeat them again and improve your bad habits into good habits instead of repeating the things that lead you to failure.
Routines make habits. Make sure to look back at your routines and check which of those routines led to unsuccessful experiences. Recall your past and replace the bitterness of the experience with motivation for you to change. If you want to do better, acting now will be the key to unlock your potential.
