What the pandemic taught me

Having recently come here to the Philippines after three years of staying in Korea during the pandemic, I have felt both anxious and excited at the same time. I was excited to finally meet my teachers and classmates and anxious because I was not sure whether I could manage it well. Before flying back to Korea, I stayed in the Philippines for one year. I could not go out freely because of the pandemic. I had a lot of worries, but it has changed since I came back to school. I was trained to be more adaptive while doing online classes. Because of this, my mind has become stronger and my growth mindset has changed.

To begin with, I had to stay in the Philippines even after I finished my final exam in 2020. The reason why I could not go to Korea immediately was because the Philippine government announced a lockdown closing all the borders. The government did not even allow me to walk on the street just in front of my house. I was so upset. However, I have become much more patient and adaptable, but it was the first time in my entire life that I was not allowed to go out, so I felt so uneasy. My classes were shifted online, and I was having difficulty. Good thing my teachers were very accommodating and helpful in helping me adjust to the new setting. When the borders were slowly opened, I could not book a ticket back to Korea. Fortunately, my guardian was there. With this, I was very thankful to her. Thus, I could resolve all the problems with my guardian’s assistance. She took care of me very carefully, and she did her best to take care of all the students at home. I am still appreciative of her. Because of that, I want to do the same thing for others.

Moreover, I learned a lot from school. My English skills improved while I was on lockdown — I have learned many things because I could only focus on studying because I had a very consistent school schedule every day. After I woke up, I had to eat breakfast, and after that, I had to study grammar, vocabulary, and reading. I did my best to focus on the teachers’ lectures and do the projects I was asked to do. At first, it was really hard for me; however, I did not give up because there was no way to run away. In addition, I attempted to improve my health by exercising every day. It has made my body healthier. My body and mind have improved greatly since I stayed there. Therefore, the pandemic has changed my school life and my habits for the better.

All in all, I have both experienced hardship and good things because of the pandemic. If there had not been a pandemic, I think I would not have adapted well in Southville. I have learned to be more focused on my studies as well as improve my English skills. In addition, I have learned to be more appreciative of my teachers for guiding me and patiently replying to my queries online, and of my guardian for supporting me genuinely.
