Through its social media platforms, the SISC Basic Ed Student Council announced on March 25 the holding of annual officer elections for AY 2024-2025 within the third term, earlier than previous polling periods.
Elections will be officially held on May 10, marking the second officer voting season to happen in AY 2023-2024. The Student Council included details for filings of candidacy, eligible aspirants, campaigning specifics, and election season timeline in its multi-post circulation. Voted candidates are incoming Grades 8 to 12 students who will fully commence their duties by the next school year.
Interested aspirants of the Student Council elections must file for candidacy by April 12. They can obtain the necessary documents from the Student Council room or any of the officers. They must undergo a screening process from the SELEC Committee composed of the Council Moderator, Principals, and the Discipline Head.
Open positions listed on the announcement were President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, SHS Strand Representatives, and Grades 8 to 10 Level Representatives. Aspirants should be onsite students who are non-officers in clubs or class councils, and they must not have any record of lower-than-average grades, major disciplinary cases, and two consecutive Student Council terms.
Explaining the reason for holding a second election within the school year, Student Council Moderator Sir John Kenny “K” Benosa said that it was a decision among the school heads to revert to the pre-pandemic process of having voting before the start of the next academic year. This is to give a preparatory transition period for elected officers.
“It was a recommendation from the academic heads . . . so that we can have the batch of the officers for the next school year already set up by the end of this school year [to] start training [and preparing] them for what’s going to happen or what they’re going to do,” emphasized Sir K.
Student Council elections occurring at the start of the school year first appeared during the officer selection for AY 2020-2021. This shift was prompted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which suspended onsite classes and delayed standard polling procedures. The school heads aspire to reintroduce the former election processes as learning conditions also return to normalcy.
Campaigning of official candidates will be conducted from April 15 to May 7. The campaign season concludes with a Miting de Avance, also the second time for this academic year, on May 8. After the election proper, the oath-taking ceremony will occur on May 14 and 15 for High School and Senior High School respectively.
As it previously happened within this school year, the Student Council Elections for AY 2023-2024 elapsed on September 21, following a campaign period from September 5 to 17, and a Miting de Avance on September 18. It was the fourth and final election season since 2020 to take place at the start of the school year.
