During the month of October, students from Southville International Schools and Colleges celebrated International Month. Monarchs set up booths in the Chuseok Festival and the International Week Fair, and participated in the History Bowl, Generation Global Conferences, and the Parade of Nations. Chuseok Booths from GAS
International started off with the General Academic Strand (GAS) students setting up booths to celebrate the Korean mid-autumn festival, Chuseok, on October 2.
Students had the opportunity to celebrate Chuseok through booths that showcased Korean culture like traditional games, snacks and engaging activities like bracelet making as well as thanksgiving letter writing. International Week Fair from HUMSS
The following week, on October 9, the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students prepared booths for the International Week Fair with the theme “Harmony Beyond Borders: Celebrating Global Citizenship.”
The HUMSS students set up a variety of stalls that were both interactive and informative about different countries and cultures, correlated with various Social Science disciplines such as Psychology, Anthropology, History, and Geography. History Bowl Competition
On October 18, students from Grades 7-12 participated in the History Bowl Competition. The event, which was hosted by the Historical Society of SISC along with the SLGE Department, was a replica of the International History Bee and Bowl which the school took part in. Each representative was chosen through a class Quizizz, where the top scorer was selected as the representative for their section in the competition. The representatives were divided into groups and had to answer a series of historical questions read by a reader, earning a point for each correct answer.
Team Herodotus, whose members were Philipe Castellvi, Venice Viesca, Angelo Buenafe, and Yein Jung, emerged as the onsite champions in the History Bowl. Samuel David Rivera, Annika Villareal, Hyun Kyu Song, and Emerald Yancy were the winners for the online team. Generation Global Dialogues
Although it wasn’t held in October, recognized as part of International Month was the Generational Global Conference that took place from September 21-22. The dialogue conference had representatives from different countries like the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
The main focus of the conference was on Peace and Security, allowing each representative to discuss their thoughts and perspectives on the topic while also listening to one another’s views. Parade of Nations
To conclude International Month, the JHS and SHS students had a Parade of Nations on October 24. where each class along with their representative walked down Luxembourg Hall to represent their class country assignment. A specific student from each class was chosen as a Global Ambassador, dressed in their national attire and engaged in discussions about internationalism.
Prior to the Parade of Nations, each representative had to submit a video discussing the assigned country and responding to a given question, all while wearing their country’s attire. After the preliminary round, five students were selected to proceed to the final round, where they drew a question from a bowl and had two minutes to answer.
Before the announcement of the winner, participants of the History Bowl and Generational Global Dialogues were awarded, followed by the live voting for the finalists. Hyeyeon Shin of 10-Commitment, representing Greece, and Matthew Cabiles of 12-Diplomacy, representing Vatican City, emerged as the winners of the Global Ambassador competition.
