To conclude the 5Cs Month Celebration, the Junior High School Monarchs ignited the stage with their moves at the Global Groove: HipHop Dance Competition. This event was held in Luxembourg Hall on February 27, 2024.

Hosted by the Filipino and Special Subjects Department and organized by Sir Angelou Langga, the thrilling event marked an energetic finale to the month-long celebration.

The event commenced with a joint performance from all of the competing groups. The audience’s enthusiasm soared as an introductory video revealed the two competing groups: Ice Cold and Pink Lamborghini Genesis Dragons. Following this, the spotlight turned to the distinguished panel of judges and the tabulators overseeing the competition.

The first competing group, Ice Cold, then took the stage. The 6-member girl group consisted of Julianne Nido from 8-Empathy, Teresa Perez from 8-Joy, and Shakira Lang, Mayumi Boreo, and Claire Hong from 8-Integrity. An opening video then played featuring an interview with the group and clips of their preparation process. When asked why they entered the competition, Shakira Lang responds, “The Ice Cold members used this opportunity to grow and nurture, as well as to bring out the best in ourselves.”

The group showcased their unique style and charisma on stage, exhibiting confidence as they delivered their snappy and powerful dance moves. As their performance came to an end, a wave of cheers and excitement erupted from the audience.

A lively performance

The afternoon wore on, it was finally the turn of the next dance troupe: Pink Lamborghini Genesis Dragons. The 7-member girl group included Cassie Prats from 9-Sincerity, Amrita Dash from 9-Harmony, Hosanna Valdez and Yuri Youn from 9-Diligence, and Seulbi Lee, Mia Bidad, and Gabbie Hermosilla of 9-Compassion. They walked onto the stage wearing matching letterman jackets. The jackets’ black and yellow color scheme added a pop of color to the stage.

Amrita's introduction video states, “They should expect a lively performance which everyone can enjoy and sing along to.” The video ended, their background music started, and so did their groove, fierce faces, and sharp movements. As they danced, deafening screams from the crowd could be heard. Some students in the audience even held signs up to show how much they loved and supported the group.

Their number concluded with a remix of Bebot by the Black Eyed Peas, and the audience was left mesmerized and in awe of the skills shown by the group. The dancers’ faces gleamed with pride, satisfaction, and accomplishment as they took their final bow.

While waiting for the results of the competition, the lights dimmed and the stage came to life with a different sort of energy. Two of the competition’s judges, who had previously been evaluating the dancers, took center stage for an unexpected intermission of their own. Although they had different areas of expertise, their respective dance numbers showed their passion for the art of dancing, inspiring the competitors and audience alike.

Following this was an individual dance battle. 2 members from each dance troupe were selected on the spot to go against each other in a freestyle dance battle. Each member gave it their all, showing their choreographic creativity, swagger, and own personal touch to their moves.

Finally, the winners were announced. After wishing and hoping from both groups, the Pink Lamborghini Genesis Dragons emerged victorious. The crowd cheered wildly for this troupe, and the girls embraced each other with proud and emotional looks on their faces.

This event was truly one for the books, and it left many people wanting to go back in time to watch the performances again. It also left many people eager to see what might happen at next year’s competition.
