SISC holds week-long STEM celebration

From March 27 to March 31, 2023, Monarchs celebrated the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Week with various activities and competitions aligned with the theme “Scientific Skills, AI Competencies, and Mathematics Proficiency Toward an Enduring and Rigorous Mindset.”


Throughout the week, each grade level prepared various themed booths scattered around the Luxembourg Campus for the STEM Week Fair. Grade 7 created an Infoboard of Elements, Grade 8 had an Anatomy Board, Grade 9 presented Food Chematics, Grade 10 held a Hologram and Math Exploration, Grade 11 organized a Math Carnival, and Grade 12 had a Math Exploration.


All students were encouraged to roam around these interactive learning booths during their break time to participate in the activities and gimmicks prepared. Additionally, the Anime Club, Youth Enthusiast for Science Club, Red Cross Youth - SISC, Mathematics Society, and Coders Club also participated in creating their own booths and activities for students to participate in.


Aside from themed booths, there were also various organized competitions overseen by the Science, Mathematics, and AI-ICT and Robotics Departments that were open for both on-site and VOLT students. On March 28, a poster-making competition was held virtually and in one of SISC’s science laboratories. Participants of the competition must choose between a digital or an on-the-spot poster that reflects the theme “Celebration of Life through Science and Technology.”


The elimination round to the Monarchs Mobile Matchup - Mobile Legends Competition was held in the Luxembourg Hall from March 28-29. There were several teams composed of up to 6 members from different grade levels. Those who successfully conquered the elimination round advanced to the finals held the day after.


Students also took on the field of robotics with the VEX IQ Sumobot and Racebot competitions managed by the AI-ICT and Robotics Department, which were held concurrently as the aforementioned, the skills of visual storytelling with the Photography Contest, and the excellence of declamation with the Spoken Word Poetry Competition. .


Awardees and accolades


On March 31, at Luxembourg Hall, students gathered for the Culminating Activity. The masters of ceremony, Ms. Shaira Bravo and Ms. Darling, first welcomed Ms. Rachel Chua, SGEN Science Subject Area Head, Ms. Judy Arguelles, Mathematics Subject Area Head, and Mr. Michael Gravamen, AI-ICT Subject Area Head, for their inspirational message video.


The first set of award winners was announced with the Photography Contest. Bang Changseong from Grade 12-Grit and Dana Lim from Grade 10-Prudence were awarded a certificate of participation. Paula Marie Gabrielle Garcia from Grade 12-Initiative won 2nd runner-up, Gabriel Obedoza Jr. from Grade 12-Grit won 1st runner-up, and Moira Mikhail Pabello from Grade 11-Synergy won the championship.


For the Digital Poster Making Contest, Reshawn Drezen Barriga from Grade 12-Rigor and Rianne Grace Beltran from Grade 10-Prudence were recognized as participants, Lim Sun Young from Grade 12-Rigor won 2nd runner-up, Shane Climacosa from Grade 12-Diplomacy won 1st runner-up, and Gabriel Obedoza Jr. from Grade 12-Grit was declared champion.


For the On-The-Spot Poster Making Contest, a certificate of participation was given to Aaron Ryley Ang from 12-Initiative, while Matthew Mersole Mellejor II from 11-Synergy won 2nd runner-up. Gwark Hyun Jeong from 11-Synergy won 1st runner-up, and Cho Yun Chae from 12-Rigor bagged the championship.


The awarding continued with the VEX IQ Racebot Robotics Competition. The team of In Su Park, Aaron Ryley Ang, and Gabriel Obedoza won 2nd runner-up, while the team of Daniel Baniqued, Jamir Balela, and Hanks Montenegro won 1st runner-up. The declared champions for this category were the group of Simon Cabaguio, Kahel Cristobal, and Dayshun San Pedro.


For the VEX IQ Sumobot Robotics Competition, Nakyung Yoon and Minsu Go won 2nd runner-up, Daniel Baniqued, Jamir Balela, and Hanks Montenegro won 1st runner-up, and Taehyong Kim and Yeri Kim won the championship.


Next, the winners of the Mobile Legends Tournament were announced. Matthew Reuel Santos, Bob Filippe Agorilla, Dean Zedrick Santos, Neil Aaron Castro, and Marvin Alegre won 1st runner-up, and the team of Dong Hee Lee, Marcus Gabriel Javier, Jude Anthony Pustrado, Julio Elizander Zioutos, and Jorenz Buendia won the championship.


Before proceeding to the next part of the program, SGEN Music & Monologues 2023 winners Ryza Boco and Aisleen Kate Villamiel sang “Roxie” from the musical Chicago as an intermission number.


The awarding of winners for the Grade 10 Hologram Project Making then commenced. For VOLT, Summer Evangelino from 10-Prudence won 2nd runner-up, Eohan Daniel Umano from 10-Conviction won 1st runner-up, and Aia Maureen Malaki from 10-Conviction was the champion. For HyVOLT, Vince Kristian Santos from 10-Commitment won 2nd runner-up, Seong Mi Song from 10-Prudence won 1st runner-up, and Oishin Bernido from 10-Prudence emerged as champion.


The event proceeded to the Couture Gala Showcase with female and male representatives per section: Cassiopeia Legaspi and Antonio Dy from 11-Innovation, Una Villano and Philipe Castellvi from 11-Synergy, Yoeiza Garcia and Shawn Go from 11-Efficiency, Alen Austria and Bea Magbanua from 11-Competence, Hannah Bermido and Maico Pitogo from 11-Excellence, Sunyoung Lim and Ace Veringa from 12-Rigor, Bianca Marie Dela Cruz and Sunwoo Lim from 12-Grit, Angelique Delgado and Myung Jun Yoo from 12-Initiative, and Chelsea Sarmiento and Jacques San Andres from 12-Tenacity.


Before resuming the awarding of Math Exploration winners, the Releve Dance Club proceeded with their intermission number of the dance “Forever Young” by Blackpink.


For the Grade 10 Math Exploration with the theme “Hologram and Math Exploration,” the group of Eun Song Choi, Janiyah Belle Arayon, Ana Raphaela Gumabao, Faeden Christian Roy Robles, Aia Maureen Malaki, Lana Mengote, Keanne Mendoza, Summer Evangelio, Marlon Spella, Theresa Keith Pingkian, and Christopher Baldelomar-Cliff from 10-Conviction won 2nd runner-up, while the group of Seong Mi Song, Jiyeon Huh, Francis Raphael Granaderos, Nahae Kim, Hankum Cho, Al Francis Sabal, Davien Wylie Lagura, Jose Antonio Guzman, and Clyde Peñera from 10-Prudence won first runner-up. The champion for this year’s Grade 10 Math Exploration was bagged by the group of Carlyn Pajarillo, Alexi Mariela Esteban, Onyu Kim, Yehyun Lee, Carl Alexander To, Carlos Miguel De Guzman, Brielle Victoria Rodriguez, Jose Antonio Masilungan, Pretty Xandie Jhil Miña, and Keezia Heart Rojo from 10-Commitment.


There were different award categories for the Grade 11 level, with the theme “Math Carnival.” 11-Efficiency won the People’s Choice Award, while 11-Competence won the Gameplay Award. 11-Excellence was recognized as the champion.


The event proceeded to the awarding of twelfth-grade students with their theme, “Math Exploration.” The 2nd runner-up was awarded to Bang Changseong, Edrigo Dauigoy, Eliz Kyne Bermudez, Junior Jerie Juane, Kim Minseo, Gabriel Obedoza Jr., Eli Valdeleon, and Yoon Seung Joo from 12-Grit. The 1st runner-up were Katrina Bianca Aguirre, Aaron Ryley Ang, Sammuel Camacho, Angelique Joy Delgado, Mary Francesca Grafil, Ma. Isabela Planta, Sofia Leigh Sindac, and Mulan Azalea Sugiarto from 12-Initiative. The championship was bagged by Bianca Isabella Raymundo, Isabella Nadine Yuzon, Micahaela Juliana Torio, Perrie Sealtiel Zorrilla, Sofia Mikaela Francisco, Amanda Celina Mercado, Gabrielle Heaven Balicao, Adrienne Joyce Jalilul, and Kareena Zain from 12-Tenacity.


Next, Gabriel Obedoza Jr. from 12-Grit was awarded champion for the Spoken Word Competition and later performed his winning piece.


Afterward, the male contestants of the awaited Couture Gaea Competition took to the stage to model down the runway, showcasing their catwalks and their costumes while proudly representing their sections. Their handmade costumes from each Grade 11-12 class were primarily made out of recyclable material — such as trash bags, newspapers, and food packs — in a message meant to promote sustainability.


The event proceeded to recognize the participating clubs that helped make STEM Week a successful and memorable event. The following organizations received certificates of participation: Anime Club, Youth Enthusiast for Science Club, Red Cross Youth - SISC, Student Council, Mathematics Society, and Coders Club.

The awarding of winners continued with awarding the participants of the Tug-O-Wits for both HyVOLT and VOLT representatives. Daniel Benileo Baniqued from 10-Leadership, Jing Zhe from 11-Innovation, Chrizel Anne Gabriel from 12-Tenacity, Suhyeon Kim from 10-Commitment, Yoeiza Garcia from 11-Efficiency, and Gabriel Obedoza Jr. from 12-Grit received certificates of participation. Then, for VOLT, Faeden Christian Roy Robles from 10-Conviction, Haruhi Ito from 10-Responsibility, and Kasey Angelica Tolentino from 11-Innovation won bronze medals. Brielle Victoria Rodriguez from 10-Commitment, Hyun Kyu Song from 11-Competence, Nicole Quinonez from 11-Efficiency, and Kaela Franzel Paed from 12-Diplomacy won silver medals. Ariana Sanchez from 10-Leadership, Hyeon Jeong Oh from 11-Excellence, and Matthew II Mellejor from 11-Synergy won gold medals. For HyVOLT, Eun Song Choi from 10-Conviction, Bea Magbanua from 11-Competence, and Paul Robert Tammerstrand from 12-Initiative won bronze medals. Joowan Kang from 10-Prudence, Seungmin Lee from 11-Synergy, and Angela Kate Tallod from 12-Service won silver medals. Aryan Vyas from 10-Responsibility, Inseo Kim from 11-Excellence, and Khen Monica Arciaga from 12-Diplomacy won gold medals.

The Grade 12 female candidates resumed modeling by walking down their runway as the judges scored their catwalks and their attire. They were then joined by their male partners for a quick question-and-answer portion that was then followed by a photo opportunity.


As the judges took their time to tally the results, the audience was presented with a same-day edit video by Sir Mikael Robrigado, highlighting the fun and excitement of the activities, presentations, and competitions of STEM Week. Intermission numbers by several teachers proceeded thereafter.


Finally, the program reached the awarding of the Couture Gaea. Starting with Grade 11, Alen Austria from 11-Competence and Hannah Rose Angelique Bermido from 11-Excellence won the People’s Choice Award. Philipe Raferty S. Castellvi from 11-Synergy and Yoeiza Garcia from 11-Efficiency won the Most Photogenic Award, and Alen Austria from 11-Competence and Hannah Rose Angelique Bermido from 11-Excellence won the Pasarela Walk Award.


Continuing with Grade 12, Jacques Raven San Andres from 12-Tenacity and Bianca Marie Dela Cruz from 12-Grit were awarded the People’s Choice Award. Sun Woo Lim from 12-Grit and Angelique Joy Delgado from 12-Initiative won the Most Photogenic Award. Jacques Raven San Andres from 12-Tenacity and Angelique Joy Delgado from 12-Initiative won the Pasarela Walk Award.

Lastly, Alen Austria from 11-Competence and Hannah Rose Angelique Bermido from 11-Excellence were crowned Mr. and Ms. Eco-Ture 2023 of Grade 11, while Jacques Raven San Andres from 12-Tenacity and Bianca Marie Dela Cruz from 12-Grit were crowned Mr. and Ms. Eco-Ture 2023 of Grade 12.


To officially close the Culminating Activity and STEM Week 2023, the honorable sponsors of the STEM Week were recognized and appreciated before formally closing with the singing of the Southville Hymn.
