Throughout the month of November, the SISC English Club had stepped in with their initiative to spearhead the very first Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Awareness Month in our school with the collaboration of seven other clubs. The aim of this event is to increase student awareness of the seventeen SDGs laid out by the United Nations to achieve by 2030. Alongside the SISC English Club, SISC Model United Nations [MUN], TheMover, SISC Debate Club, the Student Council, Environmental Fine Arts and Media [EFAM], and the Monarchs Social Prep Club had all stepped in to lend a helping hand in creating information digital outputs to be shared across their social media pages.
Over the course of the month of November, these seven clubs planned to post a total of seventeen 17 posters and infographics on their respective social media platforms to spread awareness about the SDGs. Furthermore, each club will be dedicating themselves to a specialized activity that the student body of SISC can participate in.
The SISC English Club has separated their objectives into two different categories: general and specific. Generally, this collaborative project is for the students to participate in the various events and activities and exhibit awareness about the importance of SDGs.
On the other hand, the SISC English Club has set four specific objectives which are: to develop infographic, posters, interactive games, etc. that will be posted on the respective social media platforms of the participating clubs; to foster camaraderie, friendship, and teamwork among students through group activities; to apply the 5Cs (Competence, Character, Collaboration, Creativity and Commitment to Achieve) in various activities and projects; to demonstrate lessons and skills learned from the different subject areas and lastly, to relate one’s personal experience to deepen one’s knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals.
Namely, the English Club opened an essay writing competition alongside a one-minute awareness video competition open for every SISC student. Debate Club hosted a special webinar during the first week of the SDG Awareness Month discussing the importance of achieving these SDGs. The Mover and EFAM have collaborated with each other to create a joint comic-making contest with the theme “An Environmental Utopia Through Sustainable Development.” The SISC MUN also hosted a special webinar dedicated to teaching “How to Write Letters to Leaders.” While only four of seven clubs have been mentioned here, students may look forward to the activities of other clubs on their respective social media platforms.
As 2030, the deadline of these goals, is fastly approaching, it is extremely crucial that the message of these goals and their aims be understood by each and every person in the world.
According to the United Nations, the seventeen SDGs recognize that the action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. Countries have committed to prioritize progress for those who're furthest behind. These include people in poverty, hunger, AIDs, and discrimination against women and girls. With all of that in order, the SISC English Club hopes that Grade 6, ESL 6-10, Junior and Senior High School students will be able to grasp these ideas and further them in their daily lives as a Southville student.
