Talent shines in Grade 9 English Fortnight

Across fourteen January nights, the school celebrated English Fortnight 2023 in appreciation of the English language to promote togetherness through speaking, reading, writing, and debating. Among the participating levels, Grade 9 Monarchs actively competed in recorded and character portrayal outputs throughout the three main Fortnight contests for their batch.

The events that were lined up for the Juniors batch included the Talk Show Competition, the Best in Costume Contest, and the Song Interpretation Competition.

Talk Show

Around the festive month of December, English Fortnight was first introduced through the Talk Show Competition, dubbing it a “talk show, with a twist.” Each section was to choose a Disney/Pixar movie and create a talk show with its characters. The following were the selections:

9-Fortitude: Inside Out

9-Diligence: Turning Red

9-Generosity: Coco

9-Harmony: Up

9-Sincerity: Toy Story

9-Compassion: Encanto Students began brainstorming ideas, choosing their movies to work on, and kicking off their unique action plans. Each class served something new to the table — from what they considered as amazingly accurate costumes, to brilliant acting, witty writing, impressive editing, and electrifying chemistry.

Best in Costume

The awarding ceremony, held on February 1, 2023, was a day full of anticipation and excitement as the sections bonded over all the hard work and fond memories made leading up to that moment.

Starting off the awarding ceremony, each class paraded in their Disney-themed costumes with their muses and escorts taking the lead. Dressing up as famous Disney princesses and villains, the following were the representatives for each section:

9-Fortitude: Khrisitine Bernabe and Lee Gwanjin

9-Dillgence: Jeslyn Chou and River Barriga

9-Generosity: Pauline Teves and Rodrigo Nanjari

9-Harmony: Shayanne Sesoko and Gilford Lim

9-Sincerity: Annika San Andres and JC Roman

9-Compassion: Martina Gabrielle Javier and Jean-Pierre Magpily

Song Interpretation

Grade 9 Juniors were given the song “Brave” by Sara Bareilles to perform and interpret. Like in all other activities of English Fortnight, they were given enough creative freedom to perform how they would like. Representatives were graded in different aspects; some being costumes, use of instruments, and carrying the tune in general. The following students participated in the Song Interpretation Competition:

9-Fortitude: Khrisitine Bernabe

9-Dillgence: Ashley Mislang

9-Generosity: Isabelle Gutierrez

9-Harmony: Shayanne Sesoko

9-Sincerity: Mattea Moreno

9-Compassion: Sofia Jumao-As

It was announced during the ceremony that 9-Harmony’s submission would bag the champion certificate for the Song Interpretation. Carrying the title of 1st and 2nd runner-ups were Khristine Bernabe and Isabelle Gutierrez.

Fortnight’s Conclusion

Ending the awarding ceremony, the hosts introduced the special citations for the Talk Show Competition:

Best Male Performance: Juan Lobien of 9-Compassion

Best Female Performance: Jassley Espiritu of 9-Diligence

Best Production Number: 9-Diligence

Best Production Design: 9-Compassion

With their Encanto-themed talk show, 9-Compassion won the award of Best Talk Show.

Finally, it was 9-Fortitude that brought home the Overall Champion Award for the Juniors batch. However, at the end of the day, each class won the award of strengthened 5Cs and fond memories after two weeks of spirit and festivity.
